I now set about sharing with you'll the courtship and romance between Martha Danridge Custis and her second, soon-to-be husband, George Washington. For George it was his first and only marriage; although unlikely not his first and only romance. Colonial Wenches certainly saw to that as he was one of the most sought after area bachlors.
The challenge of sharing comes because Martha burned most of George's romantic letters to her from the West and we no not what happened to her letters to him. However, bits and pieces of the former do exist, I have my diary entries from that time, and Martha was kind enough to have me over often for tea and talk. She sometimes would share their plans and dreams.
Even from afar, she was able to change his focus on being a great soldier to wanting romance, a wife, to be a good husband and father and to move into farming at Mt. Vernon.
I will share what I can in a short series to musings, based on the above and my interpretations of my diary, what Martha shared and thoughts of others.
I hope you will read along here as some of what is discovered and translated will appear along the way.
I bid you good day. Squire Bin Forever. 1620-present.
